The same affect in reducing outside noise may be achieved by hanging blankets on the walls, and that may be a novel solution for couples. The wall hangings can be an art project, or a garage sale/antique store/self-spoiling expedition.
I remember as a realtor going through homes on Monday morning realtors tour of new listings and in this one particular home the carpets were covered with a clear plastic sheet, supposedly to keep them clean, but when you walked on the plastic you could feel a layer of oil, like cooking oil, on your feet afterwards.
