I remember as a realtor going through homes on Monday morning realtors tour of new listings and in this one particular home the carpets were covered with a clear plastic sheet, supposedly to keep them clean, but when you walked on the plastic you could feel a layer of oil, like cooking oil, on your feet afterwards. I could not wait to get home and wash my feet.
There is also nothing worse than the smell of spices from last nights dinner drifting through the house either, so be careful of using strong smelling cooking ingredients during the time your home is listed for sale. The smell of home baked bread, cookies or cake is always great but can also be looked at as trying to cover other smells so I personally do not think that is a great idea either. Also, the use of fragrant candles is not a good idea as again it can be and has been used to cover odours and may be seen as just that.
The master bedroom should be well organized with nicely painted walls, bed covers and curtains the closets should be neat and not stuffed with clothing. Your potential buyer has to see themselves in that room and their clothes hanging in that closet so make the room look as big as possible.
